Educational Workshops for Teachers and Students
Emotional Literacy: Ushering in a New Era in Education
"EQ," not IQ, is the best indicator of success in children, adding up to 200 or more points to SAT scores, say psychologists who predict that "emotional intelligence" is the next "holy grail" in education. EQ involves teaching kids to how to understand their own feelings, have empathy for the feelings of others, regulate their emotions in a positive way, deal effectively with stress and develop successful coping skills. Rita Milios has published a dozen books for children, plus a teacher workbook and a workbook for school counselors that all deal with emotional literacy issues and how to effectively and easily implement EQ into the classroom.
What's Going on In There?...The Secret (and Often Scary)World of a Child's Inner Mind:
This workshop looks at how kids think from the rarely discussed, inner, subconscious mind standpoint. The innate stages of inter-psychic development, "magical thinking", the egocentric worldview of children and its implications, the creation of mental patterns, irrational beliefs and fears all are discussed. Brief experiential exercises demonstrate tools for helping children maneuver and gain competence in using this often scary, yet powerful part of themselves.
Understanding the Creative Mind: Beyond Left Brain/Right Brain:
Based on fifteen years of research, Rita discusses the capacities of brain hemispheres, understanding of memory and learning, accelerated learning techniques, and concepts of using right brain processes such as intuition, inspirations and dreams to enhance learning and creativity.
Teaching to the Whole Child: Using Whole Language in the Classroom:
Rita explores the use of whole language in an integrated teaching environment using interdisciplinary curriculums, alternative learning techniques and innovation, flexibility and playfulness to enhance learning. Using some of her own books as well as books by other authors, Rita offers "sample" whole language projects and shows how to build whole language themes.
